Shuddh Desi Romance Review: With Shuddh Desi Romance , the fresh stalwarts of the YRF camp – director Maneesh Sharma and writer Jaideep Sahni present the dilemmas of today’s youth when it comes to take the ultimate vow in life – Marriage! Set against the bustling middle-class crowd of Jaipur(again, an intimate peek into our hinterland), it tells the story of Raghuram Sitaram(Sushant Singh Rajput), a tourist guide who also works for his father-figure, a wedding planner Goyal(Rishi Kapoor) for some quick bucks and mutual benefits. He is kinda chaalu, but honest. Wearing his heart on the sleeves, he searches for true love, but develops a cold feet at his own mandap. Raghu is swept away by Gayatri’s charisma (Parineeti Chopra) – a tezzwala attraction, may be because of her bold and liberated attitude and both start to live-in. Everything is hunky dory until the element of trust starts vaporizing leading to a break- up. Enter Tara(Vaani Kapoor) with her concealed agenda to woo Raghu, make his adrenaline surge and ensure he doesn’t get away with his forte – flirtation!

Following a non-formulaic approach, Sharma expands the horizons of a typical Rom-com by mirroring the existential imbroglio among the youngsters before they commit to a relationship. Through the protagonists ,we see the firm non-conformism to the traditional ritual of marriage which they label as our society’s double standards and superficiality. The envelope is further pushed when we see them smooching awkwardly on their first meet, sharing a smoke and not making a fuss even though when they learn their partner is not a virgin. Shuddh Desi Romance becomes a long drag in the second half and it appears that the writers went on a spiral trip without giving a proper culmination to their characters.

Shuddh Desi Romance benefits heavily from the competent performances. Parineeti shines with her relatable portrayal of the fire-brand Gayatri. Sushant delivers a committed and nuanced act. His Raghu is flawed, irresistibly goofy and yet honest with his feelings. Vaani Kapoor oozes charm and confidence in equal proportions. Rishi Kapoor turns into a sanctimonious personality perennially on a gastronomical indulgence. Rajesh Sharma is adequate in a cameo.. It is a gutsy attempt in the realm of commercial cinema landscape, it defies the stereotype.
